The Sandy Catalano Bio
Sandy Catalano was born on August 8th, 1944 in Brooklyn, NY to parents, Michael and Marie Catalano. His father was serving in the army during World War II when he was born. He grew up in Roosevelt, Long Island, graduating from Hempstead High School in 1962.
Sandy was captain of his high school bowling team and was very active in the junior bowling events on Long Island. After graduating he began to compete in adult competition where he was the youngest male to ever make the finals of the Newsday Eastern Open Finals. He finished in 4th place at the age of 17. He continued to excel, soon becoming one of the best bowlers in the metropolitan area. He managed to make the finals of the Newsday Finals three times in his career. Sandy also won the Eastern Long Island All Events Title in 1963 and 1964 and was a Long Island Masters finalist numerous times.
Sandy served two years with Army intelligence during the war in Vietnam. When he returned he took over the family business and continued to run it successfully until his untimely death in February of 2009. While running CLS Custom Upholsterers, Sandy continued to bowl, for it was his ultimate passion. He co-managed the high school team for the East Islip High School, leading them to win the New York State Championship in 2008.
His biggest joy in life was teaching young people to bowl, many times giving them his spare bowling balls and equipment and most of all his spare time.
It is in this spirit that the Catalano Family has set up this scholarship in his name. We hope to inspire young bowlers as Sandy always inspired us. By administering the scholarship we hope to help young adults become motivators and inspirations just like Sandy was. We hope to see his efforts and good intentions live on through his memory and this scholarship fund. On behalf of the entire Catalano family we thank you for participating and helping us to make this a successful endeavor.
